#52Ancestors – No. 31 – Onah Golda Howes

I chose Onah for this edition because of her name. It is an old fashion name that you know came from a different time period. Onah is the sister of my grandfather Hugh A. Howes. She may be one of eleven children of which two of her siblings died in infancy. Born in 1894 to Louis Lafayette Howes and Martha Isabelle Hunter. The 1910 Census states that Martha Hunter Howes gave birth to 11 children and 9 survived.
She married Owen Francis Coburn (date not known) in Union County, Kentucky. She and Owen may have had 10 children. I have in my possession a set of photos taken at a reunion circa 1950 in Evansville, IN. Her father, Louis, is still alive at that time.
I can only identify my grandparents , my mother, and Great Grandpa Louis Howes is the following photos.

Independence Day Weekend 2014 – Revolutionary War Ancestors
My fourth great grandfather Michael Roll is alleged to have served in the Revolutionary War when he was 14 years old. Dorann O’Neal Lam contributed a pension summation about Michael at the Muhlenberg County, KY website.
I have included a synopsis here. He entered service the first time as a substitute for Andrew Livingston in 1776, at the age of 14, under Capt. Michael Troutman, Col. Johnston commanding the regiment in the state of Maryland. He marched to Brunswick, NJ. Discharged in Spring of that year.
He again entered service in the Spring of 1777 in Cumberland Co., PA, under Capt. James Byrns as a substitute for his father, John Roll. He was engaged in Packhouse service at Pittsburgh. He was marched to Fredericktown when discharged in September or October of 1777.
His last tour of duty began in April 1778 as the substitute for a person whose name he was not able to remember. He served under Capt. Alexander for two months and was discharged at Old Town.
Michael is the son of John Mangel Roll and Mary Nevis. He was originally from Pennsylvania and born in 1762. He traveled over the Wilderness Road and the Cumberland Cap and settled in Kentucky. He died in Muhlenberg County, KY; in 1834.

#52 Ancestors – No. 7 Oliver Cromwell Roll

Oliver Cromwell Roll (aka Ollie C. Roll) was of medium height and build with gray eyes and brown hair. His life was short t down by bronchopneumonia in the 1918 Influenza Epidemic. He lived long enough to marry my great grandmother Mabel Pittman and have one child, Olive A. Roll.

At 16, Ollie is working as day laborer, so is his 13 brother David; according to the 1900 Census. On his 1917 WWI Registration card, he lists his occupation as miner for Woolley Mines. I find it interesting that he and Mabel live on Olive Street in Evansville, Indiana with their daughter named, Olive.
Born to David W. Roll and Katherine Traylor Guy in 1884, most likely named for his father’s brother; Oliver C. Roll (1848-1926). He is the oldest son with five living siblings. He married Mabel on August 10, 1906. I do not have a copy of the marriage certificate. The record at FamilySearch.org cites a record showing Ollie’s last name as ROSE. It is most likely a transcription error.
My grandmother, Olive, was very fond of her father and greatly sadden by his death. Her family story is that she passed the flu virus on to her father that eventually claimed his life in 1918. After Ollie’s death, Mabel kept in touch with the Roll family throughout her life and so did my grandmother Olive.
